A human arm and shoulder girdle often weighs in excess of 14 lbs. Multiply that by two and the forces, exerted by unsupported arms, on the spine and surrounding musculature (as in a typical slouched computer users posture) can be measured in tonnes. These constant forces, applied to the body over time, are a major contributing factor to the common aches and pains complained of by computer operators. This adversely affects workers’ productivity and quality of life. If current ergonomic chairs actually supported a person’s whole spine and upper limbs, as the user worked at their desk and used a computer, this problem could be alleviated.
